We are a film production team from MMU, currently producing a Tamil family drama short film about a grandson who comes to terms with accepting his grandmother's passing through the Karumathi process.
Help us to make a Tamil family drama short film APPATHTHA that is about a grieving grandson who comes to terms with and accepts his grandmother's passing through the Karumathi procession.
THE STORY
THEME: FAMILY, LOVE, DEATH, RELIGION
GENRE: DRAMA
Logline -
A grieving grandson gets a final chance to meet his late grandmother on the 15th Day of Karumathi.
Synopsis -
Vikram(20s), a student in JB, is heading back to his hometown for his grandmother’s Karumathi. He wasn’t there for her when she passed, which wrecks him with guilt. Throughout the procession, he finds peace at his grandmother’s passing with the help of her apparition and memories past.
WHY THIS FILM?
Death is all around us. We all have experienced its touch at some point in our lives. Yet, how many of us can describe the rites and rituals that any one culture outside of our own will have to go through? We, through this story, would like to bring you on a journey to experiencing a slice of Malaysian culture
SHOOTING LOCATION
We will be shooting at a residential area in Puchong and at a beach. This plays into the setting of the film as Karumathi usually takes place in a house first and then move on to a beach later through the procession.
NOW WHAT?
We're humbly seeking your contributions to bring this dream of ours to fruition. So that we may make a film that's educational and culturally enlightening. A few steps we're taking to ensure that the final film will be of the utmost quality are as follows.
CASTING
We have engaged Astro's Ravin Rao Santheran who has graciously accepted to be part of our short film along with several other veteran actors and actresses.
PRODUCTION
The funds we secure will go towards executing the director's vision and provide logistics as well as equipment and catering services for all four days of shoot so that our cast and crew can be fed so that we may in turn feed your soul with the art we want to create.
BUDGETING
This is tentatively how we've budgeted the production of our film with plans starting from pre-production all the way to post-production and even through to distribution. We have a plan to bring a slice of Malaysian culture to the world and this budget breakdown will help explain where we plan to use the funds.

Main risk is COVID. Masks, gloves, and sanitisers will be used on set and funding will go towards providing meals and drinks as well as securing of equipment and safety in addition to overseeing the welfare of everyone on set.
Challenges include sourcing and rental of tech equipment for use during production, and editing of audio and visuals during post-production.
All of the aforementioned will be helped with by the funding of this film as we are ready to shoot once the COVID situation becomes more stable in Malaysia and we have the funds to rent equipment and hire post houses.
